Highlights Agroberichten Buitenland is de wekelijkse nieuwsbrief van het LNV Attaché Netwerk. U wordt iedere week geattendeerd op nieuws, activiteiten en achtergrondinformatie van onze LAN teams die werkzaam zijn op de economische clusters van 62 Nederlandse ambassades en/of consulaten en van daaruit 77 landen bedienen. Ook zijn ze vertegenwoordigers voor Nederland bij internationale organisaties: EU in Brussel, FAO/WFP/IFAD in Rome en OESO in Parijs. The 11th edition of Agrospecial e-magazine ‘Impact of EU Deforestation Regulation worldwide’ showcases the opportunities and challenges associated with the EUDR from the perspective of the LNV Attaché Network (LAN). They introduce us to their related work, provide insights into what is happening in their respective countries, and showcase examples of projects and actions the LAN is taking in promoting sustainable supply chains and responsible business conduct. Once again, cooperation is key, the LAN plays a crucial role in this work.

- Understanding WaPOR: FAO's tool for sustainable water uses in farming

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Rome is at the forefront of addressing one of humanity's most pressing challenges: achieving food security without depleting our water resources. As the agricultural sector consumes approximately 70% of the world's freshwater, the need for efficient and sustainable water usage is more critical than ever. Enter WaPOR, a portal to monitor Water Productivity through Open access of remotely sensed derived data developed by FAO. Jippe Hoogeveen, a project officer at FAO, plays a pivotal role in advancing WaPOR's capabilities.

- PV Rome: International Day for Biodiversity

This year’s International Day for Biodiversity took place on May 22 and put the spotlight on the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework, in short: The Plan. As chair of the Group of Friends of Biodiversity in Rome, the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands hosted a well-attended event to raise awareness about biodiversity, from the multilateral to the national level. Ambassador Beukeboom moderated the discussion, challenging the speakers to connect national experiences to global biodiversity objectives.

EUROPE - België: bye-bye Aziatisch hoornaar en welkom bestuivers!

Naar aanleiding van de Internationale Dag van de Bij (20 mei) en van de Biodiversiteit (22 mei) vroegen Belgische ecologische organisaties aandacht voor de aanhoudende hoge wintersterfte onder bijenvolken. Maar in deze periode vinden in België ook acties gericht op het brede publiek plaats, die het belang van het vergroten van het voedingsaanbod voor insecten en bestuivers benadrukken. Kortom, de krioelende en vliegende beestjes staan momenteel in België in de schijnwerpers!

FarmLife wil de transitie van conventionele landbouw naar klimaatbestendige boslandbouw stimuleren en focust daarbij op de ecologische en economische veerkracht van boslandbouw.

- Indonesia: the Sugar and Steam project in Kulon Progo

Small organic coconut producers in Kulon Progo have consistently low productivity. Subsistence farming, and therefore poverty, is common as a result of poor land management, the absence of climate-smart agriculture, and more extreme weather events. Faced with growing international demand for alternative natural sweeteners, The Sugar and Steam project wanted to turn things around by working with farmers in the Kokap district of Kulon Progo.

- Japan: new Deliflor test facility boost to local chrysanthemum sector

On May 22, Deliflor Japan proudly presented its new test facility in Hamamatsu, Japan. The wholly-owned subsidiary of Deliflor Chrysanten is herewith taking a step further in promoting the company’s many chrysanthemum varieties adapted to local climates and tastes. - Vietnam: impacts of the Netherlands agri-food and horticultural mission

From 19 to 22 March 2024, a large economic mission from the Netherlands came to Vietnam, in which 40 companies in the agrifood and horticulture sectors were led by Minister for Nature and Nitrogen Policy Ms. Christianne van der Wal. The mission played an important role in the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and the Netherlands as 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of our Strategic Partnership Arrangement on sustainable agriculture and food security as well as the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

- Vietnam: making aquaculture cooperatives in Mekong Delta inclusive and bankable

The Mekong Delta, known as Vietnam's "rice bowl," is vital to the country's agriculture, famed for its rice and growing aquaculture industries. Home to 18 million people across 12 provinces and one city, this 40,000 square kilometer region is the most productive for brackish and freshwater aquaculture due to its favorable conditions and abundant resources. Recently, the Vietnamese Government, with international support, particularly from the Netherlands, has focused on maximizing the region's potential.
