As an Agricultural Policy Analyst at the Organisation for the Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, Koen Deconinck analyzes trends and challenges for global agriculture and across the food chain. He also looks at how policies affect countries that work together in the OECD. The Netherlands plays a key part in our joint efforts to improve global food systems, Deconinck notes. He points out that working together is key. Otherwise, efforts can be scattered and opportunities missed.

Met een ruime meerderheid heeft het Belgische parlement op 2 mei 2024 het opnemen van dierenwelzijn in de Belgische grondwet goedgekeurd. Daarmee is dierenwelzijn in België officieel een beleidsdoelstelling geworden, waaraan de rechter beleidsinitiatieven en vergunningen van alle Belgische overheden kan toetsen. België is het zesde Europese land dat het welzijn van dieren in de grondwet opneemt (Duitsland, Italië, Oostenrijk, Slovenië en Zwitserland gingen België reeds voor).

Op 6 mei jongsleden bracht de Franse regering zijn nieuwe strategie Ecophyto 2030 uit, tot stand gekomen in nauw overleg met stakeholders. Deze strategie sluit meer bij de algemene EU-lijn aan dan de vorige, met meer oog voor een gelijk speelveld binnen de EU en met derde landen, en met meer waarborgen voor boeren.

Hungarian fruit farmers need to adapt - And also embrace Mediterranean fruits

De LUGA start van 7 mei tot 18 oktober 2025 in Luxemburg. Het is een openlucht land- en tuinbouwexpositie die op verschillende locaties zal plaatsvinden. Op de site in Ettelbrück zal met name de link met de land- en tuinbouw naar voor komen. De organisatie betrekt graag Nederland hierbij en is op zoek naar Nederlandse innovatieve technologieën, die tentoongesteld kunnen worden. LUGA is met name op zoek naar een innovatief voorbeeld van een duurzame en lokale voedselproductie voor de toekomst.

The Polish Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Polish Academy of Sciences won the tender organized by the European Union. The "Framework Contract for Analytical Services, Including Cross-cutting Analysis and Synthesis, on Agriculture and CAP Governance" agreement covers five years of cooperation, during which IRWiR PAN - and the consulting company Pricewaterhousecoopers (PWC) - will substantively support DG AGRI in analyzes related to economic aspects, environmental, climate and social issues, as well as the management of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) throughout the European Union.

The 5th European Horticultural Congress took place from 12 - 16 May 2024, this time organized by the University of Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine Bucharest and Romanian Society of Horticulturists, in the Palace of the Romanian Parliament. Irrigation is one of the critical issues in increasing productivity and competitiveness in the Ukrainian agricultural sector. The full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine caused significant damage to Ukraine’s irrigation. After the full-scale invasion started, a major part of irrigated land was occupied. As a result of the explosion of the Kakhovka Dam, the water supply to 306,500 hectares of irrigated land ceased.

Dit voorjaar is een challenge opengesteld voor de zoektocht naar alternatieven voor veen in de Nederlandse export naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk (VK) en de winnaar is inmiddels bekend! Veen wordt veel gebruikt in potgrond, substraat en groeimateriaal voor planten. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk is echter er een groeiende vraag naar producten die alternatieve materialen bevatten. Daar is veel maatschappelijke steun voor, vanwege de milieu-impact van dit materiaal. Bij de winning van veen komt namelijk CO2 vrij.

India is op afstand de grootste producent van melk ter wereld; binnenkort wordt een derde van de wereldproductie in India gerealiseerd. We signaleerden eerder al dat er een bijzonder groot expansiepotentieel is in alle schakels van de zuivelketen  met veel kansen voor Nederlandse technologie en kennis. De zuivel is door de ambassade in Delhi inmiddels aangemerkt als een prioritaire markt/thema combinatie en publiceert binnenkort een marktrapport. Dit artikel is een eerste aanzet voor meer bewustwording van de kansen.

Egyptian growers aim to be as efficient with water as they can be. Dutch partners come along side to support them with data-driven tools and knowledge that may improve irrigation strategies and support companies to include water in their long-term business strategies. Last week, through a hybrid workshop, the Dutch embassy in Egypt connected Dutch experts with Egyptian growers to exchange ideas, share knowledge and together look for new business opportunities.
