Dried fruits producers in Kyrgyzstan are expanding international cooperation

To help Kyrgyz agricultural companies and support the development of agricultural exports in general, UNDP in collaboration with Erkin Consult LLC is launching a new project aimed at supporting producers of dried fruits, dried berries and nuts in Batken, Jalal-Abad and Issyk -Kul regions. The main aim is to improve value chains and increase the competitiveness of target products and companies from Kyrgyzstan in international markets.

Thus, an ordinary packaging of dried apricots produced by Kyrgyz company “Altyn Aimak” and found on the shelves of American supermarket became a viral hit on social networks and opened new horizons for Kyrgyz producers.

Director of “Erkin Consult” LLC, Aibek Marazhapov, noted that dried fruits, dried berries and nuts from Kyrgyzstan are famous for their natural taste, however, in order to successfully compete in the global market, local producers have to solve a number of problems:

• Lack of certificates for orchards and production: Many farmers and processing companies do not have the necessary certificates, which significantly reduces the export potential of target products.

• Poor product quality: Non-compliance with production and product standards, limited knowledge of market requirements.

• Limited opportunities: Lack of information about new markets and modern sales methods.

“Production facilities, makeshift and outdated equipment and low production volumes are just some of the problems our manufacturers face,” says Marazhapov. He also emphasized the need for training companies exporting targeted products on;ine and managing export processes.

Based on the results of an open competition, seven export-oriented companies were selected to participate in the project. Selection criteria included high development potential and significant production performance.

After assessing the needs of producers of target products, the project will provide them with the necessary support, including training, individual expert advice, improved production infrastructure and assistance in entering new markets.

The project plans to create at least 100 new jobs, at least half of which will be provided to women. More than 120 farmers and specialists from processing enterprises will receive the necessary knowledge and skills. Particular attention is paid to gender equality, disability inclusion and environmental sustainability.

The initiative is funded by the Government of Finland and implemented within the framework of the UNDP project "Aid for Trade in Central Asia". This initiative represents an important step towards strengthening economic stability and sustainable development in Kyrgyzstan, providing local producers with the opportunity to enter new international markets and improve the quality of their products.
