Mexico: 18 Dutch companies participate in a successful Poultry and Pig Farming Roadshow
From 10 to 14 October, a group of 24 representatives of 18 Dutch companies visited Mexico’s main poultry and pork production regions as part of a roadshow organized by the agricultural team of the Netherlands Embassy in Mexico. They had the opportunity to present their solutions to some of Mexico’s most important poultry and pork producers, to get to know the dynamic Mexican market, and to meet many new potential clients. Sustainability challenges and lessons learned from the Netherlands were also shared with Mexican producers at the network events that were part of the roadshow.
Main production regions
From 10 to 14 October, 24 representatives of 18 Dutch companies participated in a “Poultry & Pig Farming Roadshow” in Mexico. During the roadshow, which was officially opened by Dutch Ambassador Wilfred Mohr, participants visited some of Mexico’s most important poultry and pork producers in important production areas in the states of Puebla, Queretaro, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Sonora. While many of the Dutch participants were already active in Mexico, for quite a few of them it was their first on-site exploration of the Mexican market.
Sales pitches
Among the visited Mexican companies were Avigrupo, Patsa, El Calvario, Grupo SRS, Pilgrim’s, Bachoco, Proan, Gena, Norson, Cacharamba, Mayocabo, Yoreme and Grupo Soles. Dutch participants had the opportunity to present their innovative and sustainable solutions in genetics, animal nutrition, farm technology, design, lighting and automatization, animal welfare and health, manure treatment and processing equipment to these companies’ top management through individual sales pitches.
Network events
Many more Mexican producers attended the network events in Tepatitlan (Jalisco) and Ciudad Obregon (Sonora), organized to facilitate new business contacts between Dutch and Mexican companies. Sector organizations UNA and OPORMEX presented the current state of the Mexican poultry and pork sectors to the Dutch visitors, as well as current challenges and opportunities.
Sustainability lessons from The Netherlands
The roadshow was however not focused on doing business alone: During the network events, Janneke Janssens of Dutch publishing company Roodbont publishers presented the current environmental and sustainability challenges that the livestock farming sector faces in The Netherlands, as well as the lessons learned and best practices developed to overcome these challenges.
Mexico’s poultry sector
Mexico’s poultry and pig farming sectors are growing fast and are expected to continue on their growth path over the next years. The size of its poultry sector has tripled over the last three decades, and Mexico is currently the world’s sixth largest poultry producer. Poultry producers in Mexico continue to consolidate, integrate vertically, expand production and develop new lines of business. Many are keen to invest in biosecurity – in particular in the face of the permanent risk of Avian Influenza, in modernization of their hatcheries and slaughterhouses, and in biodigesters and manure processing technologies, creating opportunities for Dutch suppliers of technological solutions
Mexico’s pork sector
According to a recent Rabobank report, Mexico’s pork industry has transformed itself over the last three decades from a low-tech, fragmented production sector into a globally competitive pork supplier through investments in facilities, breeding programmes, nutrition and vertical integration. It has adopted international animal health and biosafety protocols and improved herd quality, genetics, disease management and hog productivity.
