New agroclimatic map of Bulgaria to guide farmers
The Institute of Soil Science is ready to launch the project
Bulgarian Institute of Soil Science, Agrotechnologies and Plant Protection "Nikola Poushkarov" is ready to prepare an agroclimatic map of the country, which will show the suitability of individual areas for growing different agricultural crops. The project was presented on March 21st by Prof. Irena Atanasova, PhD - director of the Institute of Soil Science, during the first meeting of the Advisory Council on Mountain and Semi-Mountain Agriculture.
According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Kiril Vatev, who participated in the meeting, mountainous and semi-mountainous regions are the most favorable territories in the country for organic agriculture. In these areas, organic farming can increase the added value and thus, Bulgaria can quickly catch up with other European countries in terms of organic agriculture share.
During the meeting, the problems and challenges in complying with conditionality in the mountainous areas were presented, as well as the possibilities for assistance under the Strategic Plan for the Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas 2023-2027 for farmers in these areas.
