Valorisation of manure towards sustainability and circularity

Manure has long been an essential resource for soil fertility and plant nutrition. However, with increasing global challenges related to nitrogen levels, nutrient cycles, and sustainable farming practices, the need for innovative manure management is more pressing than ever. The Netherlands is taking strong steps in manure valorization, focusing on turning surplus manure into a valuable asset for agriculture worldwide.

Insights from LAN teams around the world

This edition of Agrospecial provides insights from the Netherlands Agricultural Network (LAN), which plays a key role in addressing manure-related challenges and opportunities on a global scale. Agricultural counsellors and their teams share knowledge on market developments, policy frameworks, and technological innovations in manure processing. The magazine highlights initiatives and developments around valorisation of manure not only in European countries, such as France, Germany, Italy,  Denmark and Sweden and Romania, but also in Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal, South Korea and Vietnam where LAN is actively involved in exploring new opportunities for manure utilization.

The Dutch approach

The Netherlands is committed to closing the nutrient cycle – creating sustainable solutions through knowledge exchange, collaboration, and investment in circular agriculture. The Dutch approach includes innovative solutions adapted to local needs such as precision fertilization, regional nutrient optimization, and tackling the challenges in the manure market. Through transparency we will get better insights in which areas increased use of animal manure and nutrients is possible and where it can be reused for food production elsewhere.

Call for international collaboration

As the Netherlands works towards a more sustainable and circular agricultural system, we invite all stakeholders – policymakers, businesses, knowledge institutions and non profit organisations – to explore this Agrospecial and engage in the discussion on sustainable manure management and nutrient recycling.
