Orange Farm Day: Dutch Expertise to Boost Horticultural Production in Senegal
As part of its HortiCôte program, the Embassy of the Netherlands organized the *Orange Farm Day* on October 25, 2024. This program, aimed at sustainably enhancing horticultural production, enables Senegal to benefit from innovations and investments from Dutch companies while strengthening bilateral cooperation. It also opens up new perspectives for sustainable, fruitful, and mutually beneficial commercial relations.
Operational Projects
On the operational front, two projects are currently being deployed in the Niayes region, in collaboration with Senegalese and Dutch partners such as *HortiSenegal* and *Onion Farming for the Future*. The most recent project involves developing an action plan by experts for the creation of a pilot agricultural cooperative, which will include an integrated farm in the Niayes. This project was initiated in response to a request from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock.
Integration of Agroecological Solutions
Particular emphasis is placed on integrating agroecological solutions to promote biodiversity, as well as the health of producers and consumers. This approach aims to strengthen the sustainability and resilience of horticultural production in Senegal.
Objectives of the HortiCote Program
One of the main objectives of HortiCôte is to attract more businesses to Senegal. In this dynamic, the Orange Farm Day was a key event. This gathering highlighted the dynamism of Dutch companies in the agricultural sector and their collaboration with local Senegalese stakeholders.
Company Presentations
Sixteen Dutch companies or their local representatives showcased their services and products through stands, covering all areas of the horticultural value chain: seeds, organic fertilizers, agricultural equipment, irrigation systems, storage warehouses, and more. This exhibition allowed participants to discover innovative solutions tailored to the needs of the Senegalese market.
Information Sessions
In parallel, an information session was organized on key topics such as *HortiCôte Senegal, **Smart Agriculture, and **Agroecology*. This session was particularly appreciated by participants, as it highlighted the added value of Dutch expertise and products in the Senegalese agricultural ecosystem.
Conclusion
The event attracted nearly 150 participants, all eager to discover the innovations presented by exhibitors. The collaboration between the Netherlands and Senegal in the field of horticulture is a successful example of international partnership, aimed at stimulating economic growth and promoting sustainable agriculture. Through these initiatives, Senegal can expect a significant improvement in its horticultural production while fostering environmentally friendly practices.
