Kazakhstan calls for scaling up successful soil restoration projects
Problems of soil degradation, carbon farming and other issues related to soil protection were the subject of discussions at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which was held in Baku.
Chairman of the Land Management Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan Murat Temirzhanov noted that Kazakhstan, which has 200 million hectares of agricultural land, is an ideal platform for the implementation of "carbon farming". Such methods of agricultural production allow reducing emissions and improving soil quality. However, the implementation of technologies requires coordinated work and effective interaction both at the national and international levels.
"Our mission is to implement the President's instructions on carbon farming and the creation of a carbon hub in the Central Asian countries based in Kazakhstan. The continuation of the discussion of the mechanisms for implementing the instructions of the head of state is planned for early December this year in Riyadh," said Murat Temirzhanov.
In turn, representative of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan Saule Moldabayeva, speaking at the Pavilion of the global Save Soil movement within the framework of COP29, emphasized that solving the problem of soil health requires a multilateral strategy that goes far beyond national borders.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture expert, international cooperation, technological innovations and professional development of human resources are crucial for effective soil conservation. Therefore, achieving global goals requires a broad exchange of knowledge, especially in the field of introducing new technologies for soil survey and restoration.
Saule Moldabaeva also emphasized that scaling up successful soil restoration projects requires targeted funding from international funds.
In turn, the Save Soil movement presented a policy document at COP29, calling on the Convention to facilitate urgent access of farmers to climate financing to restore soil health.
