Six months of the Empower Youth4Food campaign in Vietnam
The first six months of the Empower Youth4Food (EY4F) Vietnam Chapter have been the start of an impactful journey. Launched amidst the vibrant backdrop of the Netherlands Economic Mission to Vietnam in March 2024, the campaign has quickly gained momentum through a series of targeted initiatives designed to engage Vietnamese youth in shaping sustainable food systems. Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Strategic Partnership Arrangement (SPA) on sustainable agriculture, this collaboration between the Netherlands and Vietnam has been driven by our youth ambassadors. Here’s a glimpse into the dynamic activities that have marked this period and a preview at what’s coming next.
First hand industry insights with De Heus Vietnam
In June 2024, EY4F partnered with De Heus Vietnam for a company visit to their aquaculture R&D center and aquafeed mill in Vinh Long. This visit, which saw 25 enthusiastic young Vietnamese participants aged 16-21 years, provided an in-depth look into the cutting-edge research systems for aquaculture species and the sustainable practices integrated into feed production. The students explored the intricate processes behind aquaculture nutrition and sustainability initiatives, gaining firsthand experience of how these practices contribute to improving value chain efficiency. This experience is set to spark their interest in careers in aquaculture. Read more about the visit here.
Inspiring the next generation: video competition
On August 12, 2024, International Youth Day, EY4F launched the “Harvesting Tomorrow – Youth in Sustainable Agriculture” video competition. This exciting initiative encourages Vietnamese youth to creatively engage with the theme of sustainable food systems. By sharing their ideas through social media with the hashtag #EY4FVideoCompetition, participants are not only showcasing their innovative thinking but also actively contributing to the dialogue on sustainable agriculture. The winner, who will be announced on World Food Day, October 16, will receive a day of orientation with one of the campaign’s impact partners and a ticket to the Green Economy Forum & Exhibition (GEFE) 2024, taking place from October 21-23 in Ho Chi Minh City.
Showcasing success stories
To further inspire and educate, EY4F has teamed up with ShrimpTech Vietnam to produce four compelling video success stories. These videos spotlight the diverse career paths within the shrimp sector, featuring the journeys of young Vietnamese professionals who are making their mark in this field. In addition, the campaign celebrates the achievements of Vietnamese alumni who studied in the Netherlands, highlighting the value of international education and its role in advancing sustainable agriculture in Vietnam.
Looking ahead: a vision for the future
As we move forward, EY4F is set to amplify its impact and sustainability through a series of impactful initiatives. For instance by means of a Changemaker Challenge, scheduled for launch in 2025 in collaboration with the Netherlands Food Partnership, Wageningen University and Research and WorldStartup. Through this global challenge Vietnamese youth will be engaged in crafting innovative solutions for food systems transformation, climate adaptation, and biodiversity enhancement. The challenge is envisioned as a cornerstone for building a robust ecosystem of partnerships among all actors involved in shaping sustainable food systems. By fostering collaboration and providing a platform for young innovators, this initiative will drive long-term impact and support the advancement of sustainable food systems.
