The 13th edition of the Agrospecial e-magazine, ‘Peace with nature: global biodiversity commitment’, focuses on the vital role of biodiversity in agriculture and nature, especially in the lead-up to the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which will take place in Colombia from October 21 to November 1, 2024.

This special edition delves into the opportunities and challenges associated with preserving and enhancing biodiversity from the perspective of the Netherlands Agricultural Network (LAN). The agricultural counsellors and their teams share insights into their work, highlight initiatives in their respective countries, and showcase examples of projects and actions that promote sustainable agricultural practices and responsible stewardship of natural resources. They are actively involved in initiatives that foster the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity. In these efforts, cooperation, innovation and knowledge exchange are key, and LAN plays a crucial role in mainstreaming this global commitment.

Biodiversity is not just about the variety of life on earth; it is the bedrock of a resilient  ecosystem. Healthy ecosystems, sustained by rich biodiversity, are essential for sustainable agricultural productivity as well as clean water, living soils, food sources, and breathable air. This requires a holistic approach that integrates biodiversity into agriculture, water, and soil management.

As we approach COP16, we invite all stakeholders - policymakers, businesses, knowledge institutions, NGOs and societal organisations - to engage with the issues addressed in this Agrospecial. Understanding the critical importance of biodiversity in our ecosystem is the first step towards meaningful action. We hope this edition inspires collaboration and fosters a collective commitment to create a sustainable and biodiverse future.
