Grain Export Performance

Total exports reached 10.6 million tonnes, a 17% increase compared to the previous season. Wheat dominated exports, followed by corn, rye, barley, oats, and sorghum.

While export volumes increased significantly, revenues from foreign sales decreased by 19% due to lower transaction prices.

Main export destinations

In the period July 2023 - April 2024, domestic exporters placed grain mainly on the EU market (nearly 6.4 million tonnes, 61% of total grain exports), primarily in

  • Germany -3.7 million tonnes - 35% of grain exports,
  • the Netherlands- 1.2 million tonnes - 12% and
  • Spain- 380 thousand tonnes, 4%.

4.2 million tonnes of grain were exported to third countries (39% of grain exports).

Cereal grain (mainly wheat) was exported to:

  • Nigeria- 1 million tonnes, 9% of total grain exports,
  • Great Britain- 574 thousand tonnes, 5%,
  • South Africa- 501 thousand tonnes, 5% and
  • the USA- 230 thousand tonnes, 2%.

The recipients of approximately 67% of the wheat grain volume were non-EU countries, mainly:

  • Nigeria- 1 million tons, 19%,
  • South Africa- 501 thousand tons, 9%,
  • USA- 218 thousand tons, 4%,
  • Cameroon- 212 thousand tons, 4% and
  • Angola -203 thousand tons, 4%.

The significant recipients of wheat among EU countries were Germany (1.3 million tons, 25%) and the Netherlands (141 thousand tons, 3%).

The export of corn from the country in the period July 2023 - April 2024 amounted to almost 3.5 million tons and was 4% lower than in the same period of the previous season. Corn was exported mainly to EU countries (2.9 million tons, 85% of the export of this grain).

The main recipients of corn were:

  • Germany- 1.3 million tonnes, 39% of exports,
  • the Netherlands -847 thousand tonnes, 24.5% and
  • Belgium- 186 thousand tonnes, 5%.

Corn Exports

Corn exports were slightly lower than in the previous season. The majority of corn exports went to EU countries, with Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium being the major markets. Non-EU countries, including Great Britain and Norway, also imported corn from Poland.

Grain imports

Imports of cereal grain to Poland during the ten-month period of the 2023/2024 season (July 2023 - April 2024) were significantly lower than during the same period of the previous season. The reduction in the volume of imported grain was mainly due to the ban on grain imports from Ukraine introduced by Poland and good harvests in 2023. 790 thousand tons of cereal grain were imported to Poland between July 2023 and April 2024, 76% less than during the same period of the last season.

The largest import was wheat, which accounted for 61% (480 thousand tons) of the total volume of cereal grain imported to Poland. In the import structure, barley accounted for 14% (113 thousand tons), and corn - 16% (129 thousand tons). The value of imported cereal grain amounted to EUR 344 million and was 64% lower than a year ago.

In the period July 2023 - April 2024, 682 thousand tons of cereal grain were imported from EU countries to Poland, which accounted for 86% of the total volume of grain import. As in previous years, grain was imported to the country mainly from:

  • Slovakia -327 thousand tons - 41% of grain imports, including 297 thousand tons of wheat and from
  • the Czech Republic- 165 thousand tons - 21%, including 144 thousand tons of wheat.

Imports of grain to Poland from non-EU countries in the period July 2023 - April 2024 amounted to 108 thousand tons (14% of imports). The largest import from Ukraine was barley (35 thousand tons), which was not subject to an administrative ban on imports.

Over the ten months of the 2023/2024 season, the volume of foreign trade balance in grain was positive and amounted to 9.9 million tons (69% higher than in the same period of the previous season). At the same time, the value balance amounted to EUR 2 billion and was 3% higher than in the same period of the 2022/2023 season.

Grain from Ukraine

As a result of large imports of oats from Ukraine to the EU, the European Commission introduced an automatic safeguard mechanism (ATM) on 18 June 2024. It consists in restoring the customs duty rate on oats imports from Ukraine, which is EUR 89/t according to the customs tariff, until the end of 2024. In addition, the EC introduced an EU duty-free quota for approximately 4 thousand tonnes of oats from Ukraine for all Member States, which will be valid from 1 January to 5 June 2025.

According to the Polish Ministry of Finance, in the period July 2023 - April 2024, 521 tonnes of oats were imported from Ukraine to Poland, which was not covered by an administrative import ban. Since the beginning of the 2023/2024 season, grain supplies from new harvests in the Northern Hemisphere and strong competition for sales markets, especially from Russia and Ukraine, which had significant surpluses, have been putting downward pressure on grain prices. Grain supplies from new harvests also contributed to the continued downward trend, and among non-EU countries: in 2024 in the Southern Hemisphere, mainly from Australia, Argentina and Brazil.
