Leading up to the Stockholm World Water week, the 12th edition of Agrospecial e-magazine ‘Tackling agricultural water challenges worldwide’ showcases the opportunities and challenges associated with water management from the perspective of the Netherlands Agricultural Network (LAN). Several Agricultural Counselors tell us more about the water challenges in their countries and provide insights in how they are tackling these challenges working together with Dutch and local stakeholders. We also hear more about the perspective from the private sector with Nature’s Pride and public-private partnerships with Netherlands Food Partnership and Netherlands Water Partnership.
Water is a resource that we cannot live without. It is used in our everyday life and plays a significant role in food security, agriculture and biodiversity. However, climate change has made our water challenges greater and more global. As Meike van Ginneken, the Water Envoy for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, said: "People experience the impacts of climate change through water." From droughts to floods, the list of challenges is long. Fortunately, through international collaboration, innovative technologies, research and knowledge exchange, we are able to tackle these issues to create a water safe and secure world.
The Netherlands has a long history with water. Over the centuries, the Netherlands learned how to manage its water issues making it now the world’s best protected delta. With water challenges becoming a more pressing issue worldwide, the Netherlands wishes to put its water expertise to use and share its knowledge and best practices internationally for not only water safety and water security but also food security and biodiversity.
