Moving to a more self-sufficient and circular poultry sector in Senegal
A 2021 study gave a handy overview of the Senegalese poultry sector and showed the potential for (Dutch) investments. Now it’s time to look into solutions that make the (animal) protein transition more resilient and allow countries like Senegal to make their food systems less dependent on external inputs.
Value Chain analysis
The Sense study commissioned by RVO provides an overview of different value chains that offer opportunities for Dutch-Senegalese cooperation. As a follow-up of this report, a bilateral working group was set up consisting of businesses from both counties and a mission with NABC to Senegal in 2023 to establish new business relationships.
Creating a circular poultry vision
This year, a study was started in March to support Senegal in its quest to become more self-sufficient. The ongoing research led by Circle Economy Foundation focuses on risks of the current “linear” system (e.g. increasing imports of expensive soy and maize, loss of value due to unused poultry waste) and “circular” business solutions that can make the sector more future-proof (e.g. feed sourced from food industry waste streams, feed based on Black Soldier Flies and compost made from poultry faeces). The study is carried out both in Senegal and in Côte d’Ivoire in partnership with two local consultants and Food Netherland Partnership.
