Horticulture in Vietnam

The Vietnamese Horticulture sector is growing rapidly, with production systems slowly moving away from traditional open-field production to protected cultivation. Food safety and quality is becoming more and more important due to increasing local consumer demand for safe food and high standards and the increase of exports to various markets, including the EU.

The Netherlands and Vietnam are working together towards sustainable and circular horticulture while also having ambitions being key players in the international markets. Decreasing the footprint of agriculture, using land and water resources more efficiently, reducing food waste, applying good agricultural practices is all part of the integrated circular approach and the key agenda of the partnership in agriculture between Vietnam and the Netherlands.

The Netherlands Pavilion

HortEx Vietnam 2024 was the perfect destination for businesses operating in the horticulture and floriculture industry in Vietnam. The 7 participating organizations in the pavilion expanded their businesses and network with many new opportunities by directly connecting to leading horticulture businesses, producers, distributors and experts; displaying and promoting products directly to the 175 participating companies and 7.000 visitors.

The Netherlands Pavilion made of sustainable materials, was one of the exhibition's highlights during the HortEx Vietnam. The collective pavilion with environmental-friendly design provided a great space for B2B meetings. The pavilion had its own coffee corner, with coffee from Hoi An Roastery. Besides, both the flower wall and Virtual Reality drew the attention of the public and part of the pavilion became therefor also a selfie booth.

This report was the basis for the panel discussion “Vietnamese and the Netherlands cooperation on sustainable floriculture” where both Vietnamese and Dutch stakeholders shed their lights on the sustainable development of the horticulture and floriculture industry in Vietnam.

The topics discussed included: the importance of qualified starting material, benefits of indoor farming in relation to the use of fertilizer and pesticides and the role of local governments in supporting the development of the sector. The session was concluded by highlighting the importance of further collaboration between the Netherlands and Vietnam to address the current challenges and strengthen the sector as a whole.
