Supporting Moldova in establishing a Horticulture Office

The Republic of Moldova wishes to establish a Horticulture Office, a public institution that shall professionalize and speed up the development of the horticulture sector. A delegation with State Secretary in the Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, Mr. Vasile Sarban, 4 leaders of the main associations in horticulture and USAID representatives, visited the Netherlands for learning and inspiration. Jos Leeters from HollandDoor organised and guided the visit.

The program included visits to the main Dutch institutions and network organisations with a mandate in sector development, promotion, research and knowledge building: the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Glastuinbouw Nederland, Top Sector Tuinbouw & Uitgangsmaterialen, Greenports Nederland, Fresh Produce Center, World Horti Center, Rijk Zwaan, Tomatoworld, Brightlands Campus Venlo, Netherlands Water Partnership and Fruit Tech Campus.

This study tour was part of the Rural Competitiveness and Resilience Activity (RCRA), implemented by Chemonics International in Moldova and funded by USAID. The goal of this program is to stimulate a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the regional crisis brought on by the latest Russian invasion of Ukraine. The wine industry and high value agriculture are priorities in the program.

Implementation of the Moldovan Horticulture Office is in full swing. With all the knowledge and insights gained during the visit, the delegation is eager to speed up the process. Moreover, the delegation learned that the Dutch government, sector organisations and businesses seek for long-term cooperation and partnerships with Moldova.
