Netherlands main destination for Colombian Hass avocados in 2023

According to the Colombian Corporation of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters - Corpohass, the Colombian Hass avocado industry had a historic year in 2023, exporting more avocado than ever before.

A total of 5,125.5 40-foot containers were exported last year. The Netherlands was the main destination with 2,703 containers, followed by Belgium with 631, the United States with 616 and other destinations in Europe and Latin America.

As reported by Corpohass, this increase is due to the production of additional harvested hectares planted and the accumulation of three harvests because of a delay of La Traviesa.  

Let us explain: One of the particularities of the avocado in Colombia is that there are naturally two harvests per year. These are called Cosecha principal (Main) and Traviesa (or Secondary Harvest). They generally occur in a referential proportion of 70% and 30% and at different times of the year, which allows Colombia's industry to offer avocados almost all year round for both local consumption and export.

Also better agricultural practices and the sector's commitment to sustainability have contributed to improving the industry performance and providing better quality produce for export.

In addition, the Colombian Hass avocado industry was consolidated in 2023 as the third most important in the country. Hass avocado was the third most exported fruit after bananas and plantains, and the second most important in terms of revenue for Colombia.

This achievement is very important for Colombian agriculture because it is the result of the guild's efforts to use innovation and environmentally friendly solutions.
