Economically, the province plays a crucial role in Vietnam's agriculture, particularly as a major rice producer, earning its moniker as the "rice bowl" of the country. Dong Thap also excels in producing fruits, flowers, vegetables, and is a prominent center for pangasius fish, a freshwater variety exported worldwide. This region offers a blend of tradition, agriculture, and natural beauty, making it an enticing destination for travelers. Its agricultural land, spanning 277,039 hectares, is the foundation of its prosperity. The cultivated area extends making Đồng Tháp a biggest pangasius production province in Vietnam, yielding over 500,000 tons annually. Meanwhile, the ornamental horticulture industry flourishes across 2,735 hectares, cultivating a staggering 2,000 varieties and 12 million products. With Sa Dec City steeped in a century-old tradition of flower cultivation and Cao Lanh City's orchid-dotted landscape, Đồng Tháp is a captivating canvas of floral splendor.

A meeting of potential and prosperity

On a sunny morning in September, 2023, the vice chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Nguyen Phuoc Thien, sat down with Ms. Ingrid Korving, the agricultural counselor of the Netherlands Embassy in Vietnam. This meeting was not just an exchange of pleasantries; it marked the beginning of a transformative partnership.

Representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development unveiled the province's strengths in pangasius fish and ornamental plants. The vision was clear: to foster collaboration between Đồng Tháp's pangasius processing and exporting enterprises and Dutch experts and businesses. This partnership would open new doors in terms of markets and farming techniques, including research, technology transfer, and ornamental plant preservation techniques. The Netherlands embassy accepted Dong Thap’s invitation to participate in the Sadec Flower Festival, which will be open from December 30, 2023, to January 5, 2024. This presents a remarkable opportunity for Dutch businesses to showcase their expertise and engage with Dong Thap's agricultural community.

Investment opportunities unveiled

The province of Dong Thap extends its welcoming arms to Dutch investors seeking to tap into its rich agricultural potential. Dutch businesses specializing in aquaculture are invited to invest in Dong Thap's thriving pangasius industry, which is ranked first in the Mekong Delta in terms of production. Opportunities abound in enhancing breeding techniques, advanced processing methods, feed production, and disease control. Dutch expertise in water management and sustainable waste treatment can be invaluable for the province's pangasius farming sector.

Also Dutch horticultural experts and businesses are encouraged to explore the world of ornamental horticulture in Dong Thap. Collaborate with local stakeholders to facilitate sustainable development, introduce advanced technology for packaging, transportation, and post-harvest preservation of ornamental plants. Dutch businesses can also play a pivotal role in introducing new flower varieties that are ideally suited to the province's natural and socio-economic conditions, fostering a vibrant floriculture industry.

With Dutch collaboration on the horizon, a world of opportunities awaits in pangasius, ornamental horticulture, and beyond. We envision the growth of Dong Thap's agricultural landscape, promising a world of opportunity for Dutch businesses to contribute their expertise and innovation.
