Thailand aims for 55% of the Kingdom to be GREEN space
From 31% or 16.35 million ha of forest area in 2021, Thailand aims to increase the Kingdom’s forest area to 20.70 million ha or 40% of the country’s total area according to the 13th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2023 – 2027) and National Strategic Plan (2018 – 2037). Thailand has the ambition to increase the total green space (natural forest, economic forest, urban green) to 55% of the total country area by 2037, Mr. Bannarak Sermthong, Deputy Director-General of the Royal Forest Department told Mr. Gijs Theunissen DVM the Netherlands Agricultural Counsellor during the courtesy meeting at Royal Forest Department Head Office in Bangkok.
“Royal Forest Department (RFD) is working closely with the community and local administration agencies nationwide to increase the community forest area throughout the Kingdom. The private sector, especially the business communities, are encouraged to collaborate with RFD under the “Reforestation Program”. The Program is promoting public and community participatory to conserve the natural forest as well as to plant more trees for balancing the ecosystem and carbon credit (Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Program (T-VER)” said Mr. Bannarak during the courtesy meeting.
“It’s an honour of RFD to be invited to be a co-organizer at The Netherlands – Thailand Biodiversity Conference 2023 in Bangkok this 12th October. An expert from RFD will give a presentation on “Forest and Carbon Credit; Connecting Biodiversity in the Food System” at the Conference. Forest biodiversity is strongly connected to nature inclusive agriculture and sustainable food systems. Moreover, forest is playing a key role in carbon sequestration in our ecosystem, the Deputy Director-General of Thai RFD remarked.
