Westland delegation visits Mutsu City, Japan, to discuss collaboration in development of new greenhouse horticulture cluster
From 19 to 21 July, two representatives of the Municipality of Westland visited Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, to get a better understanding of the proposed development of a new greenhouse horticulture cluster in the city that is located in the northern tip of the main island of Japan.
The visit was a follow up to the visit of a delegation of Mutsu City to Westland in the beginning of 2023 and the signing of a letter of intent during the visit to establish a friendly horticultural partnership between the two parties.
Governor Miyashita of Aomori Prefecture and Mayor Yamamoto of Mutsu City have ambition to develop a professional greenhouse cluster and a Food Valley in the Mutsu region to revitalize the local economy.
As the start of the greenhouse cluster project, a 3.4 ha greenhouse project with Dutch horticultural technology is already under construction and would be ready next spring. The region has an area of 300 ha fallow land that is considered ideally suited for developing a Food Valley cluster.
The delegation of Westland visited the construction site of the greenhouse, the fallow land for the development of a Food Valley, among other sites in the region, and discussed future collaboration with Governor Miyashita, Mayor Yamamoto, local agricultural administration staff and agricultural entrepreneurs.
The visit of the delegation to the governor and the region was well covered by the local press, including local NHK TV.
