Romanian dairy processors collect more milk and reduce imports
Processing units in Romania collected 512,744 tonnes of cow's milk in the first five months of the year, up 13.2% compared to the same period last year, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Regarding production, the largest increase was recorded for cheese (+1.6%) while the production of acidified dairy products (yoghurt, drinking yoghurt, buttermilk and other similar dairy products) saw the largest decrease (-9.4%).
The quantity of raw milk imported by processors decreased by 38.3% in the period 1 January - 31 May 2023 compared to the period 1 January - 31 May 2022.
In May 2023 compared to the previous month, the quantity of cow's milk collected by processing units increased by 16.7%. Production of acidified dairy products recorded the highest increase (+29.5%).
The quantity of raw milk imported by processing plants decreased in May 2023 compared to the previous month by 1.9%.
Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, in May 2023 the quantity of cow's milk collected by processing units increased by 12.7%. The largest increase in production was recorded for butter (+29.2%).
Production of acidified dairy products decreased by 5.5%. The quantity of raw milk imported by processing units decreased in May 2023 by 35.7% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.
