Youth’s Support Against Food Loss and Waste in Indonesia
Jakarta, 27 November 2021, The Creative Video & Photo Story Competition titled “Rethinking Food Waste, Exploring Opportunities” - a collaboration project between the Netherlands Embassy to Indonesia and Ecoxyztem, has concluded by awarding the winners of the competition. The competition was conducted for one month since 23 October 2021 and received participations of students at high school and universities level from all over the country, inter alia Aceh, cities of Palembang, Jombang, Bogor, and Purwokerto. Participants of the awarding ceremony expressed their enthusiasm to jointly echo the needs to solve Food Loss and Waste (FLW) problems through video and photo campaigns.
Ana Saleh, Senior Policy Advisor for Agriculture, Fishery, Food, and Forestry at the Netherlands Embassy in Indonesia expressed the appreciation of the Netherlands Embassy for the collaboration and the submissions of the candidates: “the Netherlands Embassy is delighted to collaborate with Ecoxyztem in the fight against FLW, both the losses in upstream level and those that have passed through the food supply chain – what is called waste. There are so many stories behind the submitted photos and videos. It really inspires us to consider the next steps, whereas at the same time there is a crucial need to continue the campaigns against Food Loss and Waste to schools and grass roots."
The FLW is like an iceberg phenomenon. Enough attention is given and many initiatives are invented to inorganic waste, such as plastic, aluminum, glasses etc. Meanwhile the organic waste, especially generated from FLW, remains lacking. The data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), the largest composition of waste produced in Indonesia is organic (60%) with the majority coming from household (37.39%). Seeing this data, it is very important for all society elements in Indonesian to start FLW management initiatives begun with the immediate environment at home. "According to research on food waste conducted by Bappenas, UNDP and Waste4Change from 2000 to 2019, Indonesia has potential losses of around 213 - 500 trillion rupiah per year due to food waste problems. The collaboration between Ecoxyztem and the Netherlands Embassy to Indonesia, an evidence of SDGs-17’s partnerships, more massive impact will be expected to offer solutions to environmental problems compared to the pace of environmental problems itself.” said Bijaksana Junerosano, Founder of Greeneration Group in his remarks.
