Romania’s 15 confectionery players saw turnover rise
Turnover generated by Romania’s 15 biggest players on the confectionery, coffee and snacks market reached RON6.4 billion in 2020 (about EUR1.3 billion), up 6.2% from 2019, but the number of employees on the market shrank by 3%, according to ZF calculations based on data provided by the companies and on public data from the Finance Ministry.
Most top companies posted growth in 2020, even though slower one, and were less profitable or registered flat figures. The exceptions were Intersnack Romania, which saw turnover go up by 14% year-on-year and went beyond half a million euros, thus climbing one position in the top, and Agrana Romania, which registered 27% higher turnover, also going up one position in the ranking.
The officials of croissant, cookie and wafer producer Alka Trading and of coffee producer Strauss Romania say the pandemic brought new challenges beside the already existent ones, such as the lack of qualified workforce, but also a spike in raw material and packaging costs, as well as the concern of maintaining a safe work environment.
However, on the flipside, entrepreneurs on this market have learned to be more flexible and react more quickly to market changes.
