Between 2012 and 2020 South Africa’s production area for export crops expanded by 70, 000 hectares. This is according to the 2021-2030 Agricultural outlook projections report produced by The Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP).
The report asserts that in an ideal situation where all necessary pre-conditions are implemented the South African real agricultural GDP could grow by 14% by 2030. Gross production value could increase by about 2 billion USD. Such growth could be accompanied by increase in output share of black farmers by 20%, thereby strengthening the inclusiveness of the sector.
Specific preconditions that could make this achievable include:
- A stable and conducive policy and investment environment;
- Comprehensive, sufficient and predictable infrastructure and service provision and maintenance including electricity, roads and water with well-functioning municipalities;
- Comprehensive and effective farmer support programmes; and
- Effective state services such as trade affairs, port authorities, veterinary services, biosecurity control, plant health, agricultural research council
