Accelerating by ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, food and beverage industry in Thailand and Asia has been challenged for more innovative and sustainable system. Livestock (animal protein & meat) industry is facing the similar impact. Chicken meat is the most popular meat for Thai consumers. Base on report by Thai Department of Livestock Development, per capita consumption of chicken meat for Thais (in 2019) was 28 – 29 kg. Domestic consumption of chicken meat accounts for 70% of total chicken meat production of the country accordingly to report of Ministry of Industry, Thailand. Poultry production capacity in Thailand is 40 million birds/week from both integrated poultry operators and independent breeders. Chicken meat consumption of Thailand in 2021 is expected for 2 – 3% increase from 2020 results in high animal feed demand. Total animal feed production of Thailand in 2021 will be 20.7 million ton or 1% increase from 20.5 million ton in 2020. Poultry feed sector contributes more than 50% of commercial feed production of Thailand.

Thailand is the 4th largest poultry exporter after Brazil, USA and EU. Exports of cooked chicken meat account for 65% of total chicken export from Thailand while un-cooked chicken meat products (excluding paws) account for 35% of total. The outbreak of ASF (African Swine Fever) in neighbouring countries in 2020 had push surprisingly growth of pork export from Thailand.

A more sustainable livestock value chain are taken into account by all stakeholders.

More concrete and practicable objectives and collaboration are required to further improve livestock value chain sustainability.

“People must have choice and access to better quality, more safe and fair price foods which is essential to human life and foundation of sustainable development. Poultry meat is considered the most consumed protein with 38% of global meat consumption compare with 36% and 21% of pork and beef respectively” as quoted by Mr. Vasit
