Argentina five key sustainable practices are evolving
A report from the Buenos Aires Cereal Exchange indicates that the country is advancing with cover crops, crop rotation, soil analysis, variable application and nutrient balance. Combined with the direct sowing (siembra directa) this adds to good agricultural practices.
Cover Crops
In Argentina, the sowing of cover or service crops has been growing in recent years and shows a positive trend towards the future. Since 2014, the use of cover crops nationwide grew 5 times. Many producers are contributing to empirical experimentation sowing crops for rotation.
Crop Rotation
This indicator grew from 33% to 44% in the last 5 years, which meant a shift from the soybeans to mainly corn and wheat. Regarding this variable, the report indicates that all regions have increased the area destined for grassland (including alfalfa, and other animal feed crops) in general. Some provinces even exceeded 55 % in the 2019/20 campaign.

The companies export value was US $ 1.8 billion, a figure that was only exceeded in 2014, when US $ 1.892 billion was reached. The result is explained by the increase in international prices of industrialized products based on soybeans and commodities in general. In addition, shipments delayed in December and at the beginning of January due to various union force measures got back on track. Lastly, the liquidation of stocks to facilitate the entry of the next season crop was reason for higher sales.
January: first signs of recovery in the European market for Argentine meat
Exports grew 12%, but turnover fell 12% compared to the same month of 2020.
According to data provided by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), beef exports in January 2021 left a balance of 68,931 tons of beef with bone, 12% more than the 61,522 tons registered in January 2020.
However, the effects of the pandemic are still being felt in the world meat market, given that the turnover of January 2021 contributed some 199 million dollars, being 12% lower than the 226.1 million dollars obtained in January 2020.
It should be noted that the average FOB price per ton of product weight in January was
USD 4,127. This was 23.2% less than the 2020 average and one of the lowest since 2009.
