HPAI: Update Japanese suspension of live poultry and poultry products

Previous news reported after the third case of HPAI (as of 16 November 2020) 

On 12 November, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) placed temporary import suspension on Day Old Chicks, Hatching Eggs, and Liquid Egg products of poultry from AHM1, after a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in a laying hen farm in Lutjegast, in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands.

On 6 November, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) placed temporary import suspension on Day Old Chicks, Hatching Eggs, and Liquid Egg products of poultry from AHM10, after a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in a laying hen farm in Puiflijk, in the province of Gerderland in the Netherlands. AHM means the Animal Health Municipalities defined by the Netherlands.

On 7 November, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) placed temporary import suspension on birds (not poultry) from entire country of the Netherlands.

Previous news reported after the first case of HPAI (as of 2 November 2020)

On 30 October, Japan suspended imports of poultry and poultry products from the Netherlands after a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in a broiler breeder farm in Altforst, province of Gerderland in the Netherlands. For Day Old Chicks, Hatching Eggs, and Liquid Egg Products regionalization applies, and export is still possible for the not affected Animal Health municipalities (AHM).

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) placed temporary import suspension on the following products on 30 October.

  • Day-old chicks, hatching eggs and liquid eggs of poultry from AHM13 and AHM18 designated by the Netherlands. AHM means the Animal Health Municipalities defined by the Netherlands.
  • Poultry meat and poultry eggs (other than liquid eggs) from the entire country of the Netherlands.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) placed temporary import suspension on the following products on 30 October.

  • Birds (not poultry) from the province of Gelderland

For more information/clarification, Dutch exporters or their local agents are advised by MAFF/MHLW to consult Animal Quarantine Service and Quarantine Station at the Japanese port of entry before shipment to Japan.
