New ASF outbreak in southeastern Myanmar

Two months ago Myanmar made its final report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and resolved the previous cases of the African Swine Fever (ASF).  However Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (LBVD) has recently detected a new outbreak of ASF in Loikaw, Kayah State,  southeast Myanmar. Previously the ASF cases in Myanmar were found in the northeast parts of the country which border with China.

Last week on 9th July Myanmar gave an official notification to OIE about the recent ASF outbreak. Statistics suggest that the case is still continuing and so far 91 cases have been confirmed as the total number of animals affected. The latest infection was mainly due to the illegal trading and movement of live pigs and pig products between Myanmar and Thai borders, said LBVD.

Royal De Heus has a so-called Grandparent (GP) Stock Breeding farm in Kayah State and the company is closely monitoring the situation. So far there is no ASF case found in their GP farm in Demawso (20 km from Loikaw). Established in 2019, Royal De Heus’ GP farm aims to produce better quality pigs for the market on commercial farms owned by private farmers in Myanmar.
