Collaboration between Tanzanian flower farms and Hivos

Mount Meru Flowers collaborated with Hivos and their Women@Work Campaign on the implementation of new policies to strengthen the voice of their employees.

As part of the Women@Work Campaign the farm implemented a sexual harassment policy. Adoption of the policy has created awareness on what sexual harassment entails and how it can be addressed. It has created a good working condition as well. The increased empowerment employees and the creation of committees contributes to the wellbeing of the 900 employees of the flower farm in many ways.

As a result of the campaign, new collaborations were created as well. For example together with the Tanzania Plantation and Agriculture Workers Union (TPAWU) a negotiation training was organized that led to increased self-confidence of the female and male employees and improved cooperation with the farm management.

In this blog from 2019 by Hivos and Mount Meru Flowers the implemented changes on the farm and the experiences of the workers are highlighted. It gives a great insight into some of the positive outcomes of an active empowerment program within a business. This model could be good practical example for all businesses!
