The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce (SMCC), said that after the COVID-19 outbreak , e-commerce promoted the transformation of residents' consumption methods and the way of business operations with the advantage of online Innovation.

Recently, many businesses transformed their business models and established a wide range of cloud activities such as shopping, exhibitions, and fashion shows. And with success.

In the first quarter of this year, the city's total fresh food e-commerce transaction amounted to 8.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 167%. The average expenditure per order of online fresh food increased from 40 to 100 yuan. In addition, orders also increased by 80%. In February, major fresh e-commerce platforms had approximately 500 thousand orders daily, selling about 150 tons of pork and about 500 tons of vegetables.

The number of online consumers also increased significantly. In particular, the number of users over the age of 40 is growing rapidly, and middle-aged and elderly are also getting used to placing orders online through smartphones. The SMCC also expressed that they want to accelerate the digitalization of several leading e-commerce platforms through their "Shanghai Action Plan for Promoting the Development of an Online New Economy."

The action plan is to promote the development of new consumer formats vigorously, to support technical developments of crucial merchants, and promote new forms such as live e-commerce, community e-commerce, and e-commerce through audio and video sharing platforms. At the same time, e-commerce platforms are encouraged to cooperate with shopping malls and supermarkets, promote the digital upgrading of traditional businesses, and cooperate with farmers' markets to create "digital vegetable farms."

The second step is to accelerate the development of "contactless" distribution. At present, fresh food e-commerce companies have installed shared shelves in nearly 1,600 communities in Shanghai, which has improved distribution efficiency and reduced direct personnel contact. In the future, SMCC will also promote enterprises to set up unmanned pickup points in universities, hospitals, business buildings, etc.

And the third step is to encourage the development of "smart retail terminals."such as smart vending machines, smart micro-vegetable yards, and unmanned recycling bins, and strive to improve the level of intelligent and intensive services.
