UK increases its fruit & veg purchases from Spain before Brexit

From January to November 2019, the total volume of fruit and vegetables sold by Spain to the UK was 1,520 million kilos, 10.77% more than in the same period of 2018. The total value reached was 1,764 million Euros (+1.12%).

Now when the UK’s exit of the EU has been completed, it can be seen that this country has increased its purchases of fruit and vegetables from Spain, according to data from Estacom.

Between January 1 and November 30 2019, the total volume of fruit and vegetables that Spain has sent to the UK has been 1,520 million kilos, 10.77% more than in the same period last year. The volume of vegetables was 840 million kilos (+3.52%) and fruit 679 million kilos (+7.23%).

However, when taking into account the price payed by the UK, the growth was only 1.12% due to the fall in the fruit value (-4.20%) compensated by an increase in the vegetable value (+5.32%). The total value of fruit and vegetables sold by Spain to the UK in the first eleven months of 2019 was 1,764 million Euros (+1.12%), 835 million Euros regarding vegetables and 929 million Euros as for fruits.

Vegetables

The Spanish vegetables most sold to the UK have been the following:

  • Onions, garlic and leeks: 114 million kilos (+0.32%) worth 70 million Euros (+12.24%).
  • Lettuce: 110 million kilos (-0.66%) worth 100 million Euros (-3.89%).
  • Broccoli and cauliflower: 85 million kilos (-5.77%) worth 107 million Euros (+2.82%).
  • Cucumber: 83 million kilos (+12%) worth 69 million Euros (+8.25%).
  • Paprika: 79 million kilos (+30.57%) worth 107 million Euros (+36.81%).
  • Zucchini: 38 million kilos (+2.56%) worth 31 million Euros (-0.4%).
  • Eggplant: 13 million kilos (-3.69%) worth 14 million Euros (+4.55%).

Fruits

The most exported Spanish fruits to the UK have been:

  • Citrus fruit: 281 million kilos (+17.32%) worth 250 million Euros (-0.17%).
  • Stone fruit: 95 million kilos (+12.77%) worth 125 million Euros (+2.71%).
  • Watermelon: 74 million kilos (-7.04%) worth 33 million Euros (-14.5%).
  • Berries: 67 million kilos worth 217 million Euros.
  • Melon: 58 million kilos (+3.25%) worth 36 million Euros (-4.85%).
  • Grapes: 48 million kilos (-22.85%) worth 99 million Euros (-23.26%).
  • Apples, pears and quinces: 12 million kilos (+37.74%) worth 9 million Euros (+18.59%).
