Record cereal production in Romania
With a production of over 31 million tons, Romania ranked third last year in terms of harvested quantity of cereals, after France and Germany, Eurostat data show. Although Romania's production has almost doubled in the last decade, it did not reach France, the champion, which makes a double production of cereals. However, Romania ranked first regarding the quantity of harvested corn and that of sunflower, and fourth regarding the wheat. Thus, Romania had a production of 10 million tons of wheat, increased by 1.3% compared to the previous year, due to the favourable weather. In this way, Romania also climbed a position in the EU ranking, from the fifth place to the fourth place. In 2017, the local wheat production was of 9.87 million tons, according to the National Institute of Statistics. Romania's corn production in 2018 was of 18 million tons, while the sunflower production was around three million tons.
In terms of grants, Agricost from Braila, Intercereal from Ialomita and Maria Trading from Calarasi were the largest beneficiaries of the grants in the 2018 campaign, according to the data from the Agency for Payment and Intervention for Agriculture (APIA). Data include payment on the area, not on the crop. Thus, the largest farm in Romania as surface, Agricost, operating in a lease system almost 56,000 hectares in the Big Island of Braila, received a grant of over 41 million lei in the 2018 campaign.
The producer of cereals and oilseeds is controlled by the Al Dahra group in the United Arab Emirates, being bought from the entrepreneur Constantin Dulute in 2018. Agricost ended 2018 with a turnover of 375 million lei (80.7 million euro), increasing by almost 5% compared to the previous year, according to the data from the Ministry of Finance. The second largest grant was received by Intercereal from Ialomita, a company controlled by a company from Belize, with a small percentage of Interagro in its shareholding. The company received grants of 17.8 million lei in the 2018 campaign. According to the latest data, the company has about 10,850 hectares of agricultural land in exploitation. The podium is completed by Maria Trading from Calarasi, a company from a group of companies owned by several Lebanese businessmen, with activities in plant production, cattle and sheep breeding, slaughtering and export of live animals. Maria Tranding received grants of almost 8 million lei from APIA.
The first ten beneficiaries received a total of over 115 million lei, while the grants for the first 30 farms as area were over 200 million lei, according to data from APIA. The players in the field of cereals had bigger businesses last year, same as traders thus continuing the increasing trend, which brings with it an increase at the sector’s level. Trade with unprocessed cereals, seeds, fodder and tobacco, a sector where cereal traders and distributors of agricultural raw materials are active, increased by 4.5% in 2017 (the last year for which data are available), reaching 25.6 billion lei (5.6 billion euro), according to data from the Trade Register. In 2017, there were 1,452 companies in the cereal trade, having together 7,635 employees, according to the quoted source. The cereal traders’ business grew at the same rate as the cereal and oilseed cultivation sector, a sector recording an advance of 4.8% in 2017, reaching 18.6 billion lei (4 billion euro) in 2017, according to data from the Trade Register.
