Dairy producer Olympus invests EUR4M In biogas station in Romania

Olympus, one of the largest dairy producers in Romania, has invested EUR4 million in a biogas producing station.

Located on the platform of the Olympus factory in Halchiu (Brasov County), the station produces, on average, up to 600 cubic meters of biogas per hour and has a storage capacity of 2,000 cubic meters.

The technology used turns lactose and used waters resulted from the dairy manufacturing process into biogas and contributes to significantly reducing the factory’s carbon dioxide emissions.

The station enables the efficient use of natural resources, by reducing the quantity of methane gas, as well as significant cost cuts related to the production process of the Olympus factory in Halchiu.

Thus, the factory’s energy independence was ensured as a result of reducing by up to 60% the need for methane gas used for the plant’s internal consumption.

The Olympus factory in Halchiu is part of the Hellenic Group, and was inaugurated in 2011. The plant covers 35,000 square meters and has a total milk collection capacity of 75 tons per hour. The factory produces yogurt, fresh and UHT milk, cheese and sour cream. Olympus exports the products made at its Romanian plant to hypermarkets and supermarkets in Romania, as well as to Italy, Germany, Austria, UK, France and Sweden.

Hellenic Dairies Group has invested over EUR130 million on the Romanian market.
