Circular agriculture at Novi Sad Agricultural Fair
The Novi Sad Agricultural Fair, held every third week in May, is among the top ten events of its kind in Europe. For years, The Netherlands and Dutch agribusiness have been represented at this event by a vibrant Orange Pavilion. It is a “meet and greet” place for companies, clients and government representatives.
Dutch need to live up to the reputation of trendsetters in Western Balkans. Circular Agriculture (CA) was a topic of a Seminar organized during the Fair where the vision of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Netherlands was presented. Current good practices were shared by lecturers, inspiring the audience to think of further opportunities in CA in the Western Balkan countries. Attendants had an opportunity to hear about CA activities from different speakers. The FAO European Regional Office’s (Budapest, Hungary) presented its activities in promoting agro-ecology. Global Green Growth Institute’s (GGGI) talked about projects on climate change adaptation via circularity. The Seoul-based GGGI is expanding its activities in the Western Balkans via its Budapest-based project office by building on world-wide experience.
The goal of this seminar was not only to bring inspiring case examples to the region but to also to spread the word on regional trailbrazers: a biomass-based factory in Bosnia-Hercegovina and a biogas plant in Serbia are already paving the way in circular economy and agriculture and have set good example for others! Follow up meetings with Serbian authorities have been arranged to discuss and discover areas of mutual interest for future activities.
