First Dutch Demo-Greenhouse for Protected Horticulture in Myanmar
On 2 May 2018, the Dutch ambassador to Myanmar, H.E. Wouter Jurgens, officially opened a first demonstration greenhouse for growing vegetables in Heho, Shan State.
A consortium of Dutch and Myanmar companies and consultancies, such as Rijk Zwaan, Koppert Biological, PRIVA, VEK, Larive and from Myanmar side City Mart and Fresco realized this important facility to demonstrate modern cultivation techniques and best practices in a protected greenhouse. The demo site also can help to support bilateral interests for market access and investments in this very important sector.
The facility will serve to show-case how to improve income, productivity and quality of growing crops as tomatoes and bell peppers and meanwhile decreasing the use of agro-chemical inputs and very importantly in Myanmar, hazardous chemical pesticides.
The greenhouse is located very near to the State Agricultural Institute of Southern Shan for vocational agricultural education and will also serve as training facility for students and vegetable farmers.
