Romania’s grain production went up by 12.4% in 2017
Romania’s grain production went up by 12.4% in 2017, to 24.46 million tons, despite a 6.9% drop in the surface cultivated with cereals, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).

The total area cultivated with cereals was 5.1 million hectares in 2017, with maize accounting for 47% of this area. Wheat occupied 39.7% of the total surface cultivated with cereals.
The maize production reached 14.3 million tons, up by a third versus 2016, while the wheat production went up 17%, to 9.88 million tons.
The surface cultivated with oilseed crops increased last year by 6.9%, to 1.74 million hectares while the oilseed production went up by 29%, to 4.66 million tons.
Romania also recorded higher outputs of dried pulses, sugar beet, potatoes and vegetables. The production of grapes also went up by 45% while the surface of vineyards remained similar. Meanwhile, the fruit production went down by a quarter due to the frost in April 2017.
