Xyelella is spreading through Spain and arrives in Madrid
Regional authorities have just activated an action plan after locating a Xylella fastidiosa positive in Madrid.
It is an olive tree in the municipality of Villarejo de Salvanés, in the southeast of the region.
In October 2013, the bacterium was detected for the first time in Europe, in southern Italy. In 2015, it arrived in Corsica and shortly afterwards it jumped into mainland France.
In Spain it was detected for the first time in November, 2016, in a garden center of Mallorca and the first case in the Peninsula occurred in June 2017, in Alicante almond trees. It is also present in some areas of Andalucía.
