First Singapore Facility Earns BAP Certification
Add Singapore to the list of countries with a Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP)-certified processing plant, farm, hatchery or feed mill.
The Barramundi Asia Pte. Ltd. processing plant in Singapore recently earned BAP certification. It’s the first facility in Singapore to attain BAP certification.
Located in Singapore’s Jurong Fishery Port, the plant processes barramundi (Lates calcarifer) raised in its sea cages off Pulau Semakau (also known as Semakau Island), which is situated south of the main island of Singapore, off the Straits of Singapore. Established in 2007, the Barramundi Asia also operate a nursery in the area.
Currently, there are BAP-certified facilities in 32 countries in every continent except Antarctica. There were a total of 1,850 BAP-certified facilities at the end of 2017, including seven BAP-certified barramundi processing plants in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, China and Saudi Arabia. There are also 10 BAP-certified barramundi farms and five BAP-certified barramundi hatcheries and nurseries.
BAP is the world’s most comprehensive third-party aquaculture certification program, with aquaculture standards encompassing environmental responsibility, social responsibility, food safety, animal health and welfare and traceability. It’s also the only program to cover the entire aquaculture production chain — processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills.
About BAP
A division of the Global Aquaculture Alliance, Best Aquaculture Practices is an international certification program based on achievable, science-based and continuously improved performance standards for the entire aquaculture supply chain — farms, hatcheries, processing plants and feed mills — that assure healthful foods produced through environmentally and socially responsible means. BAP certification is based on independent audits that evaluate compliance with the BAP standards developed by the Global Aquaculture Alliance.
