Spanish animal health & nutrition industry grew by 5% in 2017
The Spanish sector of animal health and nutrition billed 1.4 billion euro in 2017, 5.01% more than the previous year. These figures shows the consolidation of the industry recovery after the economic crisis suffered by the country.
The 2017 growth was mainly driven by the increase in exports, which offset the lower performance of the domestic market, according to data presented by the sectoral organization Veterindustria.
Exports amounted to 479 million euro (+8.36%) while sales in the domestic market stood at 939 million (+3.38%).
Swine and pets continue leading the sector. The pig sector turnover was 330 million euro (+0.70%), accounting for 35.2% of this industry revenues. The business linked to dogs and cats grew by 14%, almost twice as much as in 2016, with a turnover of 256 million euro.
By products, veterinary medicines lead the classification (44.7% of total turnover), with 417 million euro (+6.5%). Vaccines contributed 241 million euro to the sector (+6.7%). Feed additives and premixes fell by 12.8%, reaching 133 million euro, while the segment of nutritional products experienced the highest increase (+7.5%) to 115 million euro.
