Lidl, first supermarket in Spain selling free-range eggs
The German Lidl has been the first chain in Spain to guarantee it doesn’t sell eggs from caged hens, far ahead of Mercadona who committed to do so in 2025.
After investments of two of its egg supplier farms of €10 and €11 million respectively, Lidl has bet on sustainability and animal welfare in Spain.
In Spain, 87% of the hens are kept in cages although Kantar Worldpanel points out that 7 out of 10 Spanish households prefer to consume organic, barn or free-range eggs. According to Lidl’s purchasing director, in the Netherlands 90% of the hens are free-range farmed.
