The Spanish tuna sector, at risk of massive closure
A case of commercialization fraud and several food alerts have put the focus on this species, which provides 2,000 jobs and invoice €1,200 million a year.
The Spanish tuna sector will on the ropes if the DG Santé’s threats are met to preventively paralyze a substantial part of the business: the use of frozen tuna in brine for direct human consumption and allow it only for the canning industry.
According to the sectorial organization Anfaco-Cecopesca, the crisis has been triggered by “the coincidence of several news in which neither the fleet nor the canning industry have nothing to do with them”.
Other sources go further to consider that this Brussel’s offensive obeys the pressure of exerted by importers from France, Germany of the UK, the main competitors of the Spanish companies.
Anfaco-Cescopesca is in favor of increasing controls and betting on a more demanding regulation.
