Shrimp industry urged to take actions to sustain growth momentum

To sustain its growth and capture new market opportunities, Vietnam’s shrimp industry must improve production conditions and standardize processes from production to trade, according to experts. Despite the robust growth of Vietnam's shrimp exports, with a presence in 107 global markets, the industry faces challenges such as reliance on foreign breeding stock, market fluctuations, and environmental factors like climate change.

Vietnam's shrimp exports are performing well, especially in key markets such as the EU, China, and the US, which together account for 76% of export value. However, the industry faces fierce competition from countries like Ecuador, India, and Thailand, and stringent quality standards from the US and the EU raise the bar for exporters. To enhance competitiveness, industry leaders recommend implementing proactive disease monitoring programs, improving traceability systems, and investing in infrastructure.

Vietnam Establishes New Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to Boost Efficiency and Sustainability

A new Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has been established in Vietnam, merging the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The goal of this merger is to improve efficiency in managing 25 interconnected sectors, including climate change, land resources, and sustainable development. The new ministry aims to enhance policy-making, streamline operations, and address institutional challenges to promote socio-economic growth.

Minister Đỗ Đức Duy, who was appointed to lead the new ministry, emphasized the importance of integrating environmental protection with agricultural and rural development. The restructuring has significantly reduced the number of units within the ministry from 53 to 30, making it one of the most streamlined government bodies.

EU issues 12 warnings against Việt Nam’s food and agricultural exports.

Since the beginning of 2025, the EU’s food and feed safety system has issued 12 warnings regarding Vietnamese food and agricultural exports, according to the Việt Nam SPS Office under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. These products have been handled in the form of warnings, recalls or even destruction due to non-compliance with the EU’s strict regulations. One of the main reasons is that businesses have not registered products containing ingredients classified as ‘novel foods’ under EU regulations. In particular, Germany and Austria detected products including dried basil seeds (used in beverages) and apple snail meat, which had not been licensed by the EU. As a result, these products were recalled or withdrawn from the market.
