Exports 15,000 Tons of Eggs to the US

The outbreak of bird flu in 17 U.S. states has pushed egg prices to a record high. In an effort to lower prices, the Trump administration has made an export agreement with Turkish egg producers. A revenue of  $26 million is expected from the 15,000 tons of eggs to be exported to the U.S.

Türkiye  has begun exporting around 15,000 tons of eggs to the United States as a devastating bird flu outbreak has slashed U.S. production and sent prices soaring, a leading sector official said on Wednesday.

İbrahim Afyon, President of the Central Union of Egg Producers (YUM-BİR), stated that due to the shortage in egg supply, the U.S. has turned to alternative import markets and contacted Turkish producers.

Afyon mentioned that 700 containers will be shipped, with deliveries starting in February and expected to be completed by early July.

Silifke Yogurt Earns EU Geographical Indication

Silifke Yogurt has become Türkiye's 30th geographical indication registered in the EU following the official publication of its registration.

The European Commission has announced that Turkish Silifke Yogurt has been added to the EU's list of Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs).

Silifke Yogurt is a fermented dairy product made exclusively from goat's milk or, when goat's milk is scarce, from a mixture of at least 20% goat's milk and up to 80% cow's milk. It originates from the Mersin region in southern Türkiye.

The production process involves boiling the milk for a specific period, which enhances the yogurt’s consistency and smooth, creamy texture. Compared to other yogurts, Silifke Yogurt has a firmer structure and a distinctive, clean, waxy aroma. Due to the high fat and solid content, it provides a rich and creamy mouthfeel.

FAO and EBRD Report Highlights Türkiye’s Potential in Digital Agriculture

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have released a report titled “Digital Technologies for Agriculture in Türkiye.” The publication explores the transformative role of agricultural technology (AgTech) in boosting productivity, sustainability, and resilience in Türkiye’s agrifood sector.

The report identifies key AgTech solutions, including:

  • Smart irrigation systems
  • Blockchain-based traceability solutions
  • E-commerce platforms for farmers

While large-scale farms are leading the digital transformation, small and medium-sized farms face challenges such as high costs and limited access to technology. The report outlines strategies to bridge this gap through investment and inclusive policies.

Türkiye’s Agricultural Landscape

  • Türkiye’s Agriculture  sector contributes 5.5% of GDP and employs 17% of the workforce in Türkiye.
  • Challenges such as economic volatility, resource constraints, an aging farming population, and climate change underline the need for innovative solutions.
  • Larger, high-value farms are leading in digital adoption, utilizing tools like IoT-based soil monitoring and climate control systems. However, small and medium farms lag behind due to limited resources and accessibility.
