Spain: Pig meat exports to India are growing
The export of frozen pork from Spain to India increased 6.89 times between 2016 and 2019; in the last two years, product diversification has also improved. India is a net importer of pig meat.
Exports of meat of swine (HS Code 0203) from Spain to India grew from $134,000 and 35 tons in 2016, to $923,000 and 278 tons in 2019 (Fig. 1).
Main pork products exported by Spain
The main pork product exported was frozen meat (020329). In 2018, frozen carcasses and half-carcasses (020321), and frozen hams and shoulders (020322) were also exported; in 2019, fresh or chilled meat (020219) was sent as well.
There are no recorded imports of pig meat from India to Spain.
India’s total pig meat trade
Data released by the Indian Government https://bit.ly/2RUBaDX indicate that total Indian pork imports amounted to $2.4 million between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019, up 4.59% from the same period last year.
Imports from Belgium totaled $1.22 million, followed by Spain’s ($0.79 million), Italy ($0.27 million), the UK ($0.66 million) and France ($0.01 million).
During the same period, India exported pork products worth $1.70 million, to Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Hong Kong and Germany.
