'Convenience is the key for the Spaniards'
Prepared by IRI and the European Magazine Supermarket, this is how the analysis of the major FMCG categories with the highest growth in Spain begins.
Frozen products led the sector growth during 2017, with a rebound of sales in value of 6.4%. The increases in frozen meat products (+20.5%), pizzas (+18.4%) and empanadas (+11.7%) are particularly noteworthy.
Confectionery registered the second year-to-year rise, with 4.3% driven by Easter sweets (+11.9%) and chocolates (+9%).
The podium of the categories with the fastest growth was completed by the alcoholic beverages, with an increase of 4.2%, led by beer (+4.7%), spirits (+4.1%) and wine (+3.7%).
Pet food (+3.7%), chilled and fresh products (+3.4%) and drinks (+1.4%) came next.
The study highlights that the ambient food category is the largest in Spain, with €12.3 billion in sales. Among its key products are cakes, chips, breakfast cookies and nuts.
With regard to chilled and fresh products, its sales were €10.8 billion. There is a large gap with the other categories' sales, such as alcoholic beverages (€4.3 billion) and drinks (€3.7 billion).
