Spain: Excess rain in Almería benefits tomato exports from Canaries, Senegal and Morocco
Canary Islands tomato growers, along with those from Senegal and Morocco, are the ones that benefit most from the increase in rainfall in southeast Spain.
Rainy weather in Almería is affecting the quality of its tomato by the appearance of Alternaria. This has been declared by operators in central Europe who import Spanish tomatoes, and who are being forced to increase their tomato imports from the Canary Islands and from Senegal an Morocco as well.
Alternaria is a fungus which is not appreciated during the harvest of tomato but appears during the logistics process and later at the point of destination. It usually takes about 8-10 days for the symptoms to come up.
