Spanish Mercadona: the leader that keeps on growing more than its competitors
The leader of the Spanish food retail strengthens its position. Mercadona was the supermarket chain that grew the most in 2017, reaching a market share of 24.1%, 1.2 points more than the previous year, according to the report presented by Kantar Worldpanel.
Mercadona, together with Lidl, are the only two retailers which have not stopped growing in the last five years in Spain.
Lidl and Carrefour won two tenths each one and for different reasons. Carrefour, with a share of 8.7%, strengthened its position as the second chain thanks to the promotion of its new commercial proposals, but above all "due to the incorporation of the hypermarket network that it bought to Eroski".
Ranking fifth, Lidl reached a market share of 4.3% driven by fresh food or the growth of its textile offer.
On the other hand, DIA and Eroski were the companies with the worst evolution. DIA, the firm that has more stores in the national market with about 5,000, fell three tenths, up to a share of 8.2%. Eroski also dropped three tenths, to 5.6%.
Finally, Aucham Retail (Alcampo) remained almost flat, ranking sixth, with a share of 3.5%, ahead of chains such as El Corte Inglés, Aldi and the regional ones.
