Spain recovers the 2nd position as a world tourism destination
In 2017, the number of foreign tourists received by Spain exceeded 82 million, 8.9% more than the previous year. Spain surpassed the US and it was in second position only after France.
This position is recovered after failling to the third one in 2008, when the US was ahead of Spain, where it remained until 2008 when overtaken by China. The third place was recovered by Spain in 2013 until returning to the second on in 2017.
The total expenditure made in Spain by visitors was €87 billion (+12.4%). The average expenditure per person experienced a growth of 3.1% reaching €1,061 per tourist.
The UK continues as the first country of origin, followed by Germany and France.
By destinations, Cataluña keeps as the first Spanish region, although its grow was lower than the Spanish average. The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands ranked as second and third respectively.
