Olive stone to make cement
The new material, manufactured by researchers from the Universidad Politécnica from Valencia and the Universidad Estadual Paulista from Brasil, from olive stone ash and slag from blast furnaces, is more sustainable and cheaper than the traditional one.
The scientists started from the basis that the production of olive oil and stuffed olives generates a residue, the stone, on which an energy assessment can be made, resulting in ash. Currently it’s already used as biomass for boilers.
This ash has been used for the preparation of new alkaline activation cement of great mechanical performance. This type of cement also includes slag from blast furnaces.
The result represents a considerable environmental advantage in terms of CO2 emissions.
So far the researchers have managed to manufacture mortars and high performance concrete, with enough resistance for its application in building.
