Singapore is growing vegetables in their supermarkets
Singapore’s aim to increase its food security has resulted in the emerge of several high-tech indoor farms: farms that grow leafy greens in a controlled environment. The efforts are already paying off, as many supermarkets in Singapore now offer locally produced vegetables. However, as these farms are often located inside buildings, they are out of sight of the general public. Indoor farm Sustenir found a way to increase their visibility and educate consumers on how their vegetables are grown.
Farm to table
Last week, Indoor farm Sustenir launched an exhibition, called ‘farm to table’ at the supermarket Cold Storage Great World City, where they showcase their technique. Consumers can watch the produce that is available in the shelves grow.
Indoor mini farm
Sustenir’s exhibition is not the first of its kind in Singapore. In August 2019, NTUC FairPrice at VivoCity introduced an indoor mini-farm run by ComCrop’s in their store. Showcasing the vegetables in the supermarket might give Singaporeans a better understanding of hydroponics and why these greens are more expensive than the imported ones.
