Leasing a hectare of farmland costs between EUR 836 in the Netherlands and EUR 62 per hectare in Slovakia. Romania is one of the cheapest markets for leasehold, with prices below EUR 200 per hectare.

Average rental prices per ha

Prices for leasing arable land continue to rise both in Europe and in Romania - the seventh cheapest country in the EU, according to the latest Eurostat data for 2021. The trend comes against a background of a five-fold increase in purchase prices, the highest in the EU, between 2011 and 2020 in the case of Romania and the Czech Republic.

Thus, according to data for 2021, the average lease cost for a hectare in Romania was around EUR 200.

Of the EU regions, the most expensive lease was in 2021 in the Dutch region of Flevoland (EUR 1 721 per ha), followed by the Canary Islands in Spain (EUR 1 119 per ha) and Attiki in Greece (EUR 927 per ha). In 2021, Venezia Giulia in Italy (EUR 1 714 per ha) was among the regions with the highest lease prices for arable land.

In contrast, the lowest lease was in Mellersta Norrland and Övre Norrland (both EUR 25 per ha) in Sweden, followed by Východné Slovensko (EUR 42) in Slovakia.

Leasing in grassland was always cheaper than arable land. Thus, the lease for a hectare of permanent grassland in 2021 ranged from a low of EUR 39 on average in Slovakia to EUR 337 on average in Ireland, compared to lease prices for arable land which ranged from EUR 79 to EUR 466 in the same two countries.
